Two students from New York City's Hunter College are working to transform the tone of online conversations regarding the war between Israel and Gaza.
Abraham Gutman, 21, an Israeli from Tel Aviv, and 23-year-old Dania Darwish, a Brooklyn native of Syrian descent, recently started the Facebook page Jews & Arabs Refuse To Be Enemies, reports the New York Daily News. Their page, which has more than 58,000 likes, is filled with photos of friends, families and couples who, like Gutman and Darwish, represent both sides of the conflict. Instead of exchanging negative comments, the shots show participants kissing, hugging and smiling along with signs that proclaim #JewsAndArabsRefuseToBeEnemies. The hashtag has spread to other social networks, with similar Twitter and Instagram photos filling up feeds with positive messages.
