Move over, Superman.

Super Ewan might not be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but this 8-year-old from New Haven, Michigan, is still pretty amazing.

Twice a month, you can find Ewan Drum and his family helping feed and clothe the homeless in Detroit.

Why does he do it?

It makes me feel really happy, the redheaded third-grader tells PEOPLE. I saw a bunch of people in Detroit and I wanted to go out and help them. I felt sorry for them.

And why the Superman costume?

Because I thought it was funny, he says. (Like most superheroes, Ewan doesnt like to brag).

His mom, Angela Drum, tells PEOPLE they help anywhere between 80 to 125 people each month. As for how he came up with the idea, she says he always seemed to have a special sensitivity toward the homeless.

My husband and I grew up in Detroit so we d go down to visit people or for a Tigers game, says Angela, 38, a stay-at-home mom with two younger kids.

Ewan would see the homeless people on the streets there and on the exit ramps and he d say he wanted to help them, she explains.

Last May, he brought it up to his parents again.

He said, When Im a teenager I want to dress up like a superhero and go give the homeless food and clothes - and DVD players. We just looked at each other and said, You dont need to wait until you're a teenager. You can get started on this now, Angela tells PEOPLE.

In July they started the nonprofit, calling it - appropriately - Super Ewan.
The project is truly a family affair.

The Drums buy and put together the bag lunches themselves - peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fruit snacks, cookies, carrots and celery sticks and an apple or orange with a bottle of water.

They take donations for clothing or blankets and non-perishable food.

Angela and her husband, James, 39 - as well as Ewan and his two younger siblings, Josephine, 3, and Crosby, 17 months - are at Roosevelt Park in Detroit on the fourth Saturday of each month and in Chesterfield, Michigan - a little closer to home - the second Sunday of each month.

James and I both grew up in families that fell below the poverty line and there are times we depended on the help of others, explains Angela. So for us to be in a position to be able to help people is just a huge blessing.

And, she says, to be led by a child, were just overwhelmed by that. Our two younger ones will never know anything different.

Those Ewan helps seem to truly appreciate his efforts as well.

At a recent event, Ewan was carrying around a huge thank-you card from one of the families.

You are truly a gift from God, the note said, according to a Detroit TV station.

He constantly has a smile on his face, she says. Or if hes not smiling, hes whistling. And I know if hes whistling his heart is happy.
